Building STEM skills
As an educator, I believe that STEM learning should begin from the early year programs where no distinction is created between girls and boys. It should be integrated within the school curriculum as an extension rather than a primary focus so that no pressure around the learning is stressed upon the students.
In the early years, take for example the story, 'Little Red Riding Hood' where the protagonist walks through the woods to meet her grandmother. While talking to the children, the teacher shares a virtual or physical journey into the woods and asks students to see comparisons and differences between their school compound and a wood. This activity gets the students to explore their surroundings and share their experiences. They are inspired to share this learning with their parents who help to build it further with the street they reside in. The students invariably gain an understanding of the flora and fauna and recognize the plants and animals around them. They also see a difference in the materials used to create the homes they reside in and those of people residing in the woods.
Slowly and steadily across the years design your curriculum such that STEM learning is incorporated within all subjects so that an integrated approach is achieved. We will view more such examples.
